How Buoyancy Foam Is Selected

The right foam cannot be selected from thickness alone. Density, layer construction, size, body position, flexibility, and the final vest design all matter.

One of the first questions buyers ask is:

Should we use 20 mm, 25 mm, or 30 mm foam?

That question is understandable, but thickness alone does not tell us how the finished vest will perform.

Foam selection starts with the whole product.

What Affects the Decision?

The factory needs to understand:

  • Intended age or weight range
  • Vest size
  • Required buoyancy
  • Number of foam panels
  • Front and back foam distribution
  • Outer fabric
  • Product flexibility
  • Intended water activity
  • Applicable test requirements
  • Desired appearance

Two foam sheets with the same thickness may not provide the same result if their density, composition, or compression behavior is different.

More Foam Is Not Always Better

Adding more foam can increase bulk.

It may also:

  • Restrict arm movement
  • Make the vest uncomfortable
  • Change the child’s position in the water
  • Make the product harder to pack
  • Affect the look of the finished design
  • Create pressure around the neck or underarm area

The goal is not to fit as much foam as possible.

The goal is to create the required support while keeping the vest wearable and balanced.

Foam Distribution Matters

Where the foam is placed can be as important as how much foam is used.

For example, increasing one panel without reviewing the rest of the structure may change:

  • Body angle
  • Front-to-back balance
  • Freedom of movement
  • Fit around the chest
  • How the vest rises in water

A prototype should be evaluated as a complete product.

Why Samples Are Necessary

Calculations help us prepare the first structure.

The sample then shows how the foam works with the fabric, stitching, fastening system, and body shape.

After that, adjustments may be needed.

This is normal product development, not a sign that the first material was wrong.

Factory Insight

The most useful information a buyer can provide is not a preferred foam thickness.

It is:

  1. Target market
  2. Intended user
  3. Size or weight range
  4. Product use
  5. Required standard
  6. Reference sample or structure
  7. Desired fit and appearance

Once these are clear, the factory can recommend a suitable foam structure and prepare a meaningful prototype.
